The History of FitRight
FitRight founder Taryn Watson is a Women’s Health & Continence Physiotherapist from Perth, Western Australia, with a particular passion for providing pelvic floor friendly exercise options for women in their childbearing years.
After graduating as a physiotherapist in 2007, Taryn spent the next 5 years working as a physiotherapist on maternity wards in both Perth and London. Over this time she completed a year of clinical pilates training and completed her Masters in Continence & Women’s Health Physiotherapy.
As part of her Masters studies, Taryn undertook a research project on the rate of urine leakage in women who attend gyms to exercise. The results of this study were that a staggering 50% of the women surveyed reported that they suffered from Stress Urinary Incontinence. This led to Taryn questioning why there weren’t more low impact, ‘pelvic-floor friendly’ group exercise classes in the community, and why women weren’t routinely being pre-screened by class instructors for common pelvic health issues.
FitRight was founded in 2014, by Taryn Watson
Seeing a gap in the market, Taryn launched FitRight in 2014, and began training other physiotherapists to join her in providing safe, widely accessible exercise classes for expectant and new Mums in a variety of locations around Perth.
Over the next few years, the FitRight team grew to over 40 physiotherapist contractors, and expanded to include classes for women of any age, and branches of the company for Aqua exercise and Online exercise too.
The launch of FitRight HQ - A Centre For Women’s Health
In 2021, the FitRight brand grew to include a new company – FitRight HQ Applecross was launched, together with co-owner Jessica Hextall.
Taryn & Jess went to university together and have always spoken of their passion for women’s health, exercise and business, and of their goal to one day create a ‘one stop shop’ for women to access the highest quality healthcare and exercise options during their childbearing years and beyond.
Finally (after nearly 18 years as friends, nearly 14 years as physiotherapists, and with 5 small children between them!) they realised this dream and in June 2021 they opened FitRight HQ - a Centre for Women’s Health & Exercise.
The FitRight brand today
FitRight HQ Applecross has rapidly expanded in its early years, and now offers appointments for Women’s Health Physiotherapy, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Women’s Health GP, and Clinical Exercise - as well as being the home to Best Start Lactation Consultancy.
FitRight still proudly offers the original exercise classes for women too - with an extensive timetable of FitRight Studio, Aqua and Online classes being run each week out of satellite venues including Beatty Park, Ardross Scout Hall and JumpSwim School in O’Connor.
FitRight has also created online resources and memberships including FitRight ProfessionalEd (ongoing continuing education for health and fitness professionals) and The FitRight Membership (pre and postnatal education and exercise resources).
Taryn, Jess and the rest of the FitRight team are proud of what the brand stands for, passionate about the delivery of the gold standard of these services, and excited to see how FitRight continues to grow and expand in years to come!
All of the FitRight Physio Instructors are qualified physiotherapists, who have all done extra training in pelvic floor health and exercise for women. This means that you are exercising each week with a health professional who can answer your questions about fitness, muscle and joint pain, bladder and bowel issues and more.
It also means that you are entitled to a private health fund discount on the classes if you have cover for Physiotherapy!
